Leuchtende Nachtwolken
Leuchtende Nachtwolken sind zu sehen, wenn die Sonne die dünne Schicht in 82-83 km Höhe erreicht während es am Boden dunkel ist (Sonne etwa 6 – 16° unter dem Horizont).
Außerdem muss die Region der Mesopause extrem kalt sein. Das ist auf der Nordhalbkugel meist nur im Juni und Juli der Fall.
Noctilucent Clouds become visible if the thin layer with water ice at 82 – 83 km altitude still get sunlight while it is dark on the ground (sun between 6 and 16° below the horizon).
Furthermore, the mesopause has to be extremely cold. Usually this is the case in June and July on the northern hemisphere.
Ein sehr komplexes und ausgedehntes Display von Leuchtenden Nachtwolken (NLC – vom englischen Begriff Noctilucent Clouds) am 5.7.2015. Auch hier sind Wellen, Wirbel, Bögen und Bänder zu sehen. Der obere Rand erscheint leicht rötlich. Hier erreicht das Sonnenlicht gerade noch die NLC-Schicht und geht dabei lange durch die Atmosphäre.
A very complex and extended display of Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) on 2015 July 5. The forms include waves, whirls and bands. The upper border appears reddish due to the long light path through the atmosphere for the range which gets the furthest illumination.
